The Pools.

Photobucket

While most hobbyists still use deep water dishes, it is becoming more common to see people with large custom pools in their tanks. This is good, I personally think it is a very good idea and should be done if you have the time and money and space to construct them. However, the cost is very minimal and any tank 20gallons and up, has plenty of room to make a good sized pool.

Construction for the pools usually consists of one or two pieces of plexi-glass. The first one is the only one you really need, forming the main piece to form the "frame" of the pool. The second piece is only necessary if you are planing to have a divider to separate salt and fresh water. Using 100% silicone, the glass is sealed inside. The details are difficult to describe with out proper pictures, which I dumbly forgot to take when constructing my pools. However, other members of the HCA have made there own pools since then, with pictures of construction.

Here is a simple diagram....

How steep you make the slant of the pool is really up to you, even if it is made completely strait, the crabs are completely capable of getting out, as long as you put a suitable exit item inside the pool for them to climb out on. The slant in my pools is steeper than most because I wanted my pools to be the same depth everywhere.

Here is a link to a thread on the Hermit Crab Association where some of us where sharing pictures and discussing the subject of pools and filters....

I hope this inspired you to create your own pool system.
